INTERNATIONAL WELDING ENGINEER

International Welding Engineer

The Welding Engineer is someone who has proven to possess the education, experience, and knowledge regarding all matters related to the science and technology of welding and joining. They have the capability to oversee all tasks related to and involving welding and other forms of element joining in a construction, in accordance with the technical requirements and standards governing that construction.

The training program leads, after a successful examination process, to the acquisition of the internationally recognized International Welding Engineer Diploma. This diploma is recognized worldwide and is both a criterion and a requirement for the safety and quality of constructions, in accordance with the international standard EN ISO 3834 and EN 1090. The latter mandates that structural construction products marketed in Europe must bear the CE marking. Since July 2014, this requirement has been mandatory in Greece as well, according to EU regulation 305/2011.

The program lasts 448 hours, of which 60 hours are dedicated to practical applications and exercises. Training is conducted every Friday (from 16:00 to 21:15), Saturday, and Sunday (from 09:00 to 17:45) twice a month at our company’s facilities. The program instructors are professors from higher education institutions, distinguished industry professionals, and Welding Engineers with extensive experience. The program is divided into four major modules and the practical training.

The detailed content of the program is as follows:

Module 1: Welding processes and equipment, 95 h

  • Welding technology, cutting, power sources
  • Welding methods and processes
  • Special welding processes, soldering and brazing
  • Automations, welding of plastics

Module 2: Materials and their behavior during welding, 115 h

  • Steel structures, alloys, heat treatment
  • Formation of cracks, cast iron
  • Non-ferrous metals, metallography

Module 3: Construction and design, 62 h

  • Joint design
  • Materials strength, seams calculation
  • Seams under different loading conditions
  • Design of aluminum structures
  • Fracture mechanics

Module 4: Fabrication, applications engineering, 116 h

  • QA, QC, residual stresses and distortion
  • Health and safety, Non-Destructive Testing
  • Repair welding, case studies

All lectures and corresponding distributed notes are in Greek, while English terminology is also taught. Besides practical training, extensive presentations of digital material (videos, images, etc.) are conducted during theoretical training.

At the end of each module, there are written exams. At the end of the program, there is an oral examination, which leads to the acquisition of the Welding Engineer Diploma. The exams are conducted by the Hellenic Welding Institute.

Eligibility for participation includes:

A) University graduates (engineers) from AEI and TEI institutions in fields related to mechanical engineering, materials science, and welding (e.g., Civil Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Material Scientists, Production Engineers, etc.). Engineers from other schools with a postgraduate degree in welding or metallic materials can also participate.

B) Military Academy graduates with a Master’s Degree (MSc).

C) Graduates from foreign universities who meet the entry conditions for the training program as defined by the International Institute of Welding (IIW) for the country from which they graduated.

D) Individuals nearing the completion of their studies and falling under the above categories (final year students of schools, postgraduate degrees, etc.).

To date, over 140 Welding Engineers have graduated, successfully staffing major companies in our country. The cost of attending the program can be covered by the employer’s contribution to the LAEK fund paid by the companies.
